Answers to common questions about image compression, file sizes, formats, and privacy.
Does PNG preserve the AVIF’s HDR and bit depth?
Not in this converter. It renders the AVIF through an 8-bit browser canvas before saving PNG. Colours or brightness may differ from an HDR viewer, and original metadata is not fully preserved. Keep the AVIF for an HDR or high-bit-depth workflow.
Which AVIF images are supported?
Your browser must be able to open the AVIF file. If decoding fails, an error appears for that image and the remaining files continue processing. Animated AVIF files are exported as a single still image. Keep the original for animation or HDR use.
Does converting AVIF to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG avoids further lossy compression, but cannot restore details already lost in the AVIF file.
Will transparency be preserved?
Yes. Transparent areas remain transparent in the PNG.
Why can the PNG file be larger?
AVIF stores image information very efficiently, while PNG saves the decoded pixels with lossless compression. A photographic PNG can therefore be much larger without looking better. Use PNG for an editing or compatibility need, rather than expecting it to reduce an AVIF’s size.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Processing happens locally in your browser.
What is the maximum image file size?
Pixilo currently supports image files up to 25 MB per file. This covers many photos and images used for websites, documents, email, and social media. For larger files, reducing the image dimensions before compression can help create a smaller file.
Use dimensions up to 8000 pixels per side and no more than 32 million pixels in total.
